Note
Location note: Baldur’s Gate 3 contains more than one beach area with “western” in its description. This guide covers Western Beach in Rivington, the Act Three riverside area west of the South Span Checkpoint. It does not cover the Act One Western Beach section of the Ravaged Beach, which has different geography, loot and encounters.

Introduction
Western Beach is an unnamed riverside location on the western edge of Rivington, beneath the routes leading from the South Span Checkpoint, the Open Hand Temple, the Gur Camp and Sword Coast Couriers. It is not simply a strip of sand. The location includes a broken, trap-filled coastal path, cave entrances beneath Rivington, a wrecked ship, a tunnel through the rocky ridge and a concealed bay being used for smuggling.
The beach’s main story event is a confrontation between the Guild, led here by Farlin, and the Stone Lord’s thugs, represented by Caïros. This encounter introduces or advances Aid the Underduke, the Guild’s wider conflict with the Stone Lord and the investigation that eventually leads towards Minsc, the Guildhall and the Lower City.
Western Beach is also a worthwhile exploration area in its own right. It contains three Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens, the very rare Bonespike Boots, named weapons, a useful shield material, hidden treasure, smuggling documents and a route marker connected with Wyrm’s Rock Prison.
Boundaries and internal areas
Western Beach is best understood as a connected coastal district rather than a single encounter space. Its boundaries are defined by the surrounding Rivington routes:
The location’s slopes are divided by ledges, winding paths and patches of climbable or traversable roots. Several caves and passages connect the beach to other parts of Rivington. The westernmost tunnel is the route to the smugglers’ bay. The Rivington Well cave provides another route into the beach, but that connection must first be opened from inside the underground area.
Included subareas
The following areas belong to the Western Beach location for practical exploration purposes:
The Rivington Well cave, Open Hand Temple Underground Area, Wyrm’s Rock Prison, Guildhall and Angleiron’s Cellar are separate locations, even though Western Beach connects to or references them.
Boundaries and internal areas
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| East | the South Span Checkpoint and the paths descending from it. |
| North | the Open Hand Temple grounds and the rocky ridge. |
| South | the Gur Camp and Sword Coast Couriers slopes. |
| West | the River Chionthar shoreline, a wrecked ship and the concealed smuggler’s bay. |
Access and routes
From the South Span Checkpoint
The most direct approach is to leave the South Span Checkpoint and take one of the paths leading west and downhill. The routes descend towards the shoreline. You can reach the beach from either side of the checkpoint’s surrounding roads, although the terrain is uneven and the area is easier to navigate with a character capable of jumping, feather falling or using enhanced movement.
One route leads towards the southern and eastern part of the beach, near the slopes below the Gur Camp and Sword Coast Couriers. Another heads down from the direction of the Open Hand Temple and eventually reaches the wreck and the trapped western passage.
From Rivington Well
The Rivington Well provides a hidden connection to Western Beach. At the well, the party must pass a DC 20 Perception check to notice the access into the cave below. Inside the cavern, a winch opens a blocked wall and creates a route out to Western Beach.
This is a one-way discovery until the winch is operated. If the party never notices the well’s hidden entrance, this particular route remains inaccessible.
Suggested exploration route: For a thorough but safe first visit
- 01Enter from the South Span Checkpoint.
- 02Explore the eastern slope and inspect the Rivington Well exit if it is open.
- 03Search the shoreline for the buried treasures.
- 04Follow the western route towards the wrecked ship.
- 05Deal with the mines, tripwires and dying thug.
- 06Approach the smuggling tunnel carefully, preferably with a character who can disarm traps.
- 07Bypass the Eagle Statue using the nearby wooden platform rather than crossing the trapped path.
- 08Resolve the Guild and Stone Lord confrontation.
- 09Loot the Moonrise ship immediately.
- 10Search the smuggler’s cave for Bonespike Boots, documents, valuables and the prison-breach map.
The Guild and Stone Lord confrontation
The main event occurs in the concealed bay. A ship from Moonrise Towers is moored at the shore. The Guild has tracked the Stone Lord’s smugglers to the bay, and the two groups are already arguing when the party arrives.
The Guild is represented by Farlin. The Stone Lord’s side is led by Caïros. The confrontation becomes a battle regardless of whether the party intervenes, although the party can influence how the fight develops.
Available approaches
If Farlin survives and the party supported the Guild or remained neutral, she speaks with the party after the conflict. She offers a payment and can provide information that starts or advances Aid the Underduke. The available sources disagree over the exact displayed reward, recording it as either 665 gold or 674 gold. The safest way to report this is that Farlin awards a substantial gold payment, with the precise amount apparently varying between references or versions.
If Farlin dies, her body can be questioned with Speak with Dead, but that does not reproduce the normal living-character reward or start the quest in the same way. The Stone Lord envoys cannot generally provide equivalent information through Speak with Dead.
Minsc, Jaheira and paladins
If Minsc has already been recruited, he receives additional dialogue because the Stone Lord is connected to his identity and current situation. If Minsc is present, he may attempt to explain himself to Caïros, who does not believe him.
For a Paladin of Devotion, siding with the Guild after Minsc has been recruited may count as an oathbreaking action. This is a progression-sensitive consequence and should be considered before committing to the Guild’s side.
Inspirations
The relevant Criminal inspirations are mutually exclusive. Some inspiration conditions also require the character to intervene before the fight properly begins rather than simply arriving after one faction has already won.
Available approaches
| Approach | Result |
|---|---|
| Join Farlin and the Guild | The Guild fights alongside the party against the Stone Lord’s men |
| Support Caïros in dialogue | The party may become hostile to both groups and fight both sides |
| Remain neutral or watch from a distance | The groups fight each other; the party can intervene later |
| Use certain Bard dialogue | The attempt to resolve the dispute through flyting causes both sides to become hostile |
| Attack both groups | The party can eliminate the Guild and Stone Lord forces, but loses Farlin’s reward and quest conversation |
Residents, visitors and named characters
Western Beach is not a settlement with permanent civilian residents. Its named inhabitants are mainly gang members, smugglers, victims and temporary story figures.
The Guild
Velicia has additional information available through Speak with Dead. Her interrogation reveals that she is actually a Harper infiltrating the Guild to investigate the Stone Lord.
Stone Lord’s men
Caïros is the Stone Lord’s envoy at the bay and leads the local smugglers. His corpse can provide the Corpsegrinder weapon if looted after the battle.
Other named or story-associated figures
The Dying Stone Lord Thug is normally a mortally wounded gang member who dies shortly after the party speaks to him. However, Orin can use this character’s appearance as a disguise. If the encounter is actually Orin, the conversation lasts longer and a successful passive DC 20 Perception check can reveal that something is wrong. Orin then reveals herself and teleports away. In that version of events, the real thug’s corpse can later be found in the Bhaal Temple.
Hazards and traps
Blast Mines and tripwires
Near the broken statue on the western route, the path is covered by a Steam Cloud and contains several Blast Mines linked to tripwires. The tripwires require a relatively high DC 18 Sleight of Hand check to disarm. Do not rush through this section in a clustered party, since a failed disarm or careless movement can trigger multiple explosions.
The surrounding corpses are scenery and cannot generally be interrogated with Speak with Dead.
Eagle Statue
The passage to the hidden bay contains a line of tripwires concealed by another Steam Cloud. Triggering one causes the Eagle Statue at the end of the corridor to cast Chain Lightning. The spell can jump between nearby party members and may also electrify the surrounding Steam Cloud, making a failed approach especially dangerous.
The Eagle Statue itself is not a normal interactable trap and cannot be disarmed directly. The safest method is to avoid the trapped central route and use the nearby wooden platform, apparently placed for the smugglers’ own guards.
Loot and collectibles
Major fixed loot
The Bonespike Boots are very rare footwear that increase jump distance, provide the Brutal Leap ability and grant defensive benefits while the wearer is not wearing armour or holding a shield. They are in the wooden chest at the end of the western passage, near the coordinates associated with the smuggler’s cave.
Buried treasure
The beach contains at least two buried treasures on the eastern side:
The western slope also contains a buried chest near a defaced statue. It requires a DC 20 Survival check and contains gold, a random arrow and a random very rare spell scroll. Since the scroll is random, it should not be treated as a fixed named item.
Wrecked ship
The wreck at the western end of the beach contains:
The Traveller’s Chest requires a DC 15 Perception check to notice its trap, followed by Sleight of Hand checks to disarm and unlock it. Search around and beneath the opposite section of the wreck with item labels enabled, as the second chest is easy to overlook.
The Moonrise ship and parasite specimens
After the gang battle, search the ship that was previously seen at Moonrise Towers. The ship’s storage contains two Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens, while a third specimen rests on a barrel on the deck.
These specimens are time-sensitive. They disappear after a Long Rest, so collect them before resting or leaving the area. This is one of the clearest missable opportunities on Western Beach.
Major fixed loot
| Item | Location and acquisition |
|---|---|
| Bonespike Boots | Trapped wooden chest in the smugglers’ cave |
| Corpsegrinder | Looted from Caïros after the gang encounter |
| Gleamdance Dagger | Associated with the Guild side of the confrontation and obtainable from the encounter |
| Necklace of Elemental Augmentation | Trapped Traveller’s Chest on the wrecked ship |
| Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen ×3 | One on a barrel near the bay and two in the Moonrise ship’s storage |
| Fossilised Shell | Found on the ship and usable as a shield |
| Silkroot | Pouch in the smuggler’s cave |
| Dream Mist | Bottle in the smuggler’s cave |
| Gold and valuables | Buried caches, chests and the smuggler’s treasure heap |
Smuggler’s cave
The cave beyond the trapped passage is used to move cargo from Moonrise into the city. It is a separate interior section of the Western Beach complex, but it is part of the same smuggling operation and should be searched before leaving.
Cave contents
The stool is not a second source of the functional Club of Hill Giant Strength. Sitting on or destroying this cave’s stool does not reproduce the result associated with the genuine stool elsewhere. It appears to be either a fake, a decorative object or an unused duplicate.
The rowboat cannot be used as a travel system to reach the city. It is scenery and part of the smuggling set dressing rather than a functioning transport facility.
Documents and literature
Named or identifiable written material associated with Western Beach includes:
The Note to Caïros is found near the entrance to the Western Beach passageway. It explains that certain items found nearby were stolen from an outsider rather than taken from the smugglers’ own stash.
The map in the cave is particularly useful because it points towards a possible breach into Wyrm’s Rock Prison, connecting the beach’s smuggling activity with later infiltration routes around Wyrm’s Crossing.
Quests and progression
Aid the Underduke
Western Beach is one of the earliest places where the party can directly encounter the Guild’s conflict with the Stone Lord. Speaking with Farlin after the battle can start or advance Aid the Underduke.
The choice made on Western Beach does not permanently determine every later outcome of the quest. It does, however, affect who survives, whether Farlin can reward the party, which inspirations are available and how easily the party is recognised by Guild members later.
Get Orin’s Netherstone
Western Beach can contain a disguised Orin encounter through the dying thug. This is not guaranteed to occur in exactly the same form during every playthrough, since Orin’s disguises and kidnapping-related progression can affect which NPCs are replaced. Treat the dying thug as a potential story encounter rather than assuming every apparently wounded NPC is genuine.
Free Counsellor Florrick and Wyrmway
These quests are listed as related to the area because Western Beach sits within the wider Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing progression space. The beach does not by itself complete those quests, but the nearby routes, prison references and connections through Wyrm’s Crossing can make it part of a broader exploration circuit.
Law enforcement and security
Western Beach has no conventional town guard post or checkpoint of its own. Its security is informal and criminal:
The South Span Checkpoint is nearby but should be treated as a separate location. Its guards, Steel Watch presence and access rules belong to the checkpoint rather than Western Beach itself.
