Key takeaways

  • The Lodge is in the Lower City’s Steeps district, not in Rivington, the Mountain Pass or the Underdark.
  • Its scope includes the main building, upper floors, attic and basement docks The Grey Harbour Docks are not merely an exterior backdrop, since the basement provides access to them.
  • The Lodge’s inhabitants and condition depend heavily on what happened to the githyanki egg in Crèche Y’llek.
  • If you still carry the egg in Act Three, Havkelaag offers 1,000 gold for it.
  • If Lady Esther received the egg, Ptaris appears in the Lodge, and the Society members are dead.
  • If Omeluum is rescued from the Iron Throne, returning to the Lodge completes the final part of Retrieve Omeluum and grants a useful bundle of items.

About this guide

Spoilers for Act One and Act Three, including the Society of Brilliance, the githyanki egg and the fate of Omeluum.

Overview

The Lodge is the Baldur’s Gate headquarters of the Society of Brilliance, a loose association of scholars and researchers concerned with the Underdark and unusual forms of life. It is found in the Steeps district of the Lower City, across the Upper City Gate Checkpoint, and is more than a single room or storefront. The location includes the Lodge building itself, its upper floors and attic, and a substantial basement that opens onto the Grey Harbour Docks.

The Lodge is easy to overlook because it is not a major public hub like the Elfsong Tavern or Sorcerous Sundries. Its importance is instead determined by earlier choices. If the party keeps the githyanki egg from Lady Esther, the Lodge is a peaceful research centre with a potential sale and a background-inspiration opportunity. If the party gives the egg to Esther, the same building becomes the scene of a massacre and a difficult conversation with Ptaris, the accelerated-grown githyanki child. The Lodge also becomes the Society’s return point for Omeluum after the Iron Throne.

Location, boundaries and layout

The Lodge is a medium-sized two-storey building with an attic and a large basement. It stands near the Upper City Gate Checkpoint in the Lower City’s Steeps district. The building overlooks or connects towards the harbour, and its basement leads to the Grey Harbour Docks.

The primary entrance is at street level. A party that has not yet entered can also reach the first floor by jumping onto the balcony facing the street. This can be useful for characters with strong mobility, although it is not normally necessary because the main door is the intended route.

The Lodge should be treated as one location with several internal levels rather than as a whole harbour district. The nearby checkpoint, street patrol, Upper City Gate and Grey Harbour Docks are connected landmarks, but they are not all part of the Lodge itself.

Separate neighbouring locations

The Iron Throne and Crèche Y’llek are particularly important connections, but neither is a subarea of the Lodge. Crèche Y’llek is where the githyanki egg is found, while the Iron Throne is where Omeluum may be rescued.

Separate neighbouring locations

Reaching the Lodge

From the Lower City

The Lodge is close to the Upper City Gate Checkpoint. From the checkpoint, travel into the Lower City and look for the substantial building near the harbour-facing part of the Steeps. A Flaming Fist patrol and a Steel Watcher are positioned near the entrance, making the building easier to identify.

The guards outside do not normally prevent the party from entering. The nearby argument concerns access to the Grey Harbour Docks, but it is not a conventional checkpoint encounter that blocks the Lodge’s front door.

From the balcony

A character with suitable jumping ability can reach the street-facing balcony and enter on the first floor. This is an alternative entrance rather than a separate route through a hidden area.

From the basement docks

The basement is not always available in the same condition. Its story access depends on what happened to the githyanki egg and, in particular, whether the Lodge has entered the Ptaris state. The basement docks are especially important when the Society members have been killed, because the party can find Lady Esther’s body, Ptaris and related evidence there.

The Society of Brilliance

The Society of Brilliance is a group of Underdark scholars and researchers. Blurg describes its goal as improving conditions in the Underdark rather than simply treating it as a hostile wilderness. The Lodge serves as the Society’s Baldur’s Gate base and houses research material, alchemical supplies and a vault.

The Society is not presented as a conventional quest faction with a large formal hierarchy. Its members have distinct research interests, and the Lodge’s most important internal conflict concerns Havkelaag’s attempt to test a theory about morality and inherited behaviour through the upbringing of a githyanki child.

Blurg

Blurg is a hobgoblin member of the Society and one of the Lodge’s most important active contacts. Speaking with him can begin Retrieve Omeluum, because he explains that his illithid companion is missing. Blurg is also associated with the Society’s research and can function as a trader.

Omeluum

Omeluum is an illithid researcher and Blurg’s companion. It is not permanently present at the Lodge if it has been captured, but can return there after being rescued from the Iron Throne.

Omeluum cannot be traded with after returning, although it can be pickpocketed. Speaking with it again completes the Lodge portion of Retrieve Omeluum.

Havkelaag

Havkelaag is a duergar member of the Society and the central figure in the egg-related research. If the party still possesses the githyanki egg in Act Three, he offers 1,000 gold for it. The intended experiment is to raise a githyanki from birth and investigate whether its behaviour is determined by nature or upbringing.

A character with the Sage background can also gain the Membership Admittance inspiration by asking Havkelaag about joining the Society, provided the egg has not already been handed to Lady Esther.

Lady Esther

Lady Esther is not normally a resident you meet alive in the Lodge. She is the Society-associated adventurer who initiates Steal a Githyanki Egg in the Mountain Pass. If the party gives her the genuine egg, she brings it to the Society, with disastrous consequences. In that outcome, her body is found in the Lodge’s basement docks.

Ptaris

Ptaris appears only if the party gave the genuine githyanki egg to Lady Esther. He is the fully grown result of Havkelaag’s experiment. The Society accelerated his growth and raised him under the strict Ptarian Code, leading Ptaris to interpret violence as a method of correcting moral failure. He kills the Lodge’s Society members, including Havkelaag and Omeluum, before the party arrives.

Named Society-associated entries

The last four names are listed as characters associated with the Lodge, although their practical importance is much lower than that of Blurg, Havkelaag, Omeluum, Esther and Ptaris.

The Lodge’s three major progression states

The Lodge is one of Act Three’s clearest examples of a location whose contents are determined by an earlier quest.

State 1: The egg was kept

If the party did not give the githyanki egg to Lady Esther, the Lodge remains a functioning Society headquarters. Havkelaag can speak with the party about his proposed experiment and offers 1,000 gold for the egg if it remains in the party’s possession.

This is the most important practical reason to visit the Lodge after reaching the Lower City if the egg is still in your inventory. The party can sell it to Havkelaag, refuse, or continue carrying it.

State 2: The egg was given to Lady Esther

If the genuine egg was handed to Lady Esther, the Lodge is found in a state of devastation. The Society members have been murdered, and Ptaris can be encountered through the Lodge’s upper rooms and basement dock route. The discovery exposes the consequences of the Society’s experiment and the danger of treating a child as evidence in a moral theory.

Ptaris can be fought, but the encounter also allows dialogue-based resolution. The main checks use Deception, Intimidation or Persuasion at DC 25, with lower or alternative options available to some classes or characters, including Barbarian, Githyanki and Warlock dialogue. If the party convinces him that the Ptarian Code is flawed, Ptaris recognises the contradiction in his upbringing rather than attacking.

If dialogue fails, Ptaris becomes hostile. He carries the Unflinching Protector Amulet, which can be obtained from him after the encounter.

State 3: The egg was given to another party or outcome

The egg can be destroyed, retained, substituted with an owlbear egg, sold or otherwise removed from Esther’s planned experiment. These outcomes prevent the specific Ptaris massacre state described above. The later fate of the egg and its hatchling can instead be reflected through Lae’zel or the epilogue, depending on how the egg was handled.

---

Retrieve Omeluum

Retrieve Omeluum can begin by speaking with Blurg in the Lodge or by entering the Iron Throne. Blurg explains that Omeluum is missing. The quest eventually leads to the underwater prison, where Omeluum can be found restrained in a separate cell in the south-western section.

Omeluum becomes a temporary companion during the escape and has the ability Teleport to Submersible, making it possible to move rapidly during the timed Iron Throne evacuation. If rescued, it teleports back to the Lodge.

Reward

The reward is gratitude from the Society rather than a promise of direct military assistance.

Missability and consequences

If the githyanki egg was given to Lady Esther, Omeluum’s involvement changes significantly. The Society members, including Omeluum in the Lodge state, are killed by Ptaris. In addition, the Retrieve Omeluum quest does not appear in the same way during the Gondian storyline because Omeluum is no longer available at the Lodge to initiate it.

This does not mean the Iron Throne itself becomes irrelevant, but it changes how the party encounters Omeluum. The egg decision should therefore be made with both questlines in mind.

Steal a Githyanki Egg

Although this quest begins in Act One, the Lodge is its Act Three conclusion.

Earlier stages

Lady Esther begins the quest near the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. The party must enter Crèche Y’llek and reach the Hatchery, where the final githyanki egg is guarded by Varsh Ko’kuu and other githyanki. The Hatchery contains acid, poisonous gas traps, teleporting traps and other hazards.

The egg can be obtained by persuading Varsh Ko’kuu, stealing it or making other choices that alter the outcome. Varsh’s Boots can help with the acid, and the egg itself is found in the north-western part of the Hatchery.

Act Three choices

Giving the egg to Esther produces the Ptaris state. Bringing it to Havkelaag produces the experiment route, but selling it also removes the possibility of keeping the egg for later outcomes.

---

Loot and collectibles

The Lodge contains a mixture of fixed loot, conditional rewards and research materials. Not every item is available in every progression state.

Notable fixed or conditional loot

The Unflinching Protector Amulet is only available from Ptaris and therefore requires the genuine egg to have been given to Lady Esther. It allows the wearer to use a Reaction when a nearby ally is targeted by an attack, causing that attack to automatically miss. The effect is limited to once per Long Rest in the current implementation.

Books, journals and written evidence

The Society’s letter explains that it wants a githyanki egg for research and directs the successful finder to the Lodge in Baldur’s Gate. A copy can be found on Lady Esther or her corpse, depending on the progression state.

Residents, visitors and outside personnel

Story-associated figures

Lady Esther is associated with the Lodge’s story but is normally encountered first on the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. Ptaris is conditional and appears only after the genuine egg has been delivered to Esther.

Outside the building

Fist Pantella, Fist Gneiss and the Steel Watcher are part of the visible security presence near the entrance. Their argument with nearby citizens concerns the harbour access dispute, but the patrol does not normally prevent the party from passing into the Lodge.

---

Security and law enforcement

The Lodge sits in an area watched by the Flaming Fist and the Steel Watch. The patrol outside is notable because it establishes the political tension around the Grey Harbour Docks, but it is not itself a mandatory combat or interrogation encounter.

Inside, the main danger is not law enforcement. It is the conditional Ptaris encounter. In the peaceful state, the Society’s rooms can be explored for research materials and loot. In the massacre state, the party should expect a hostile or potentially hostile encounter in the basement-dock area.

As elsewhere in the Lower City, stealing from containers or pickpocketing NPCs can trigger ordinary crime responses. The Lodge does not provide a special exemption for its research materials.

Suggested exploration routes

Safe Society route

Use this if the egg was retained.

Ptaris investigation route

Use this if the genuine egg was given to Lady Esther.

Quest-efficient Lower City route

A practical route is to visit the Lodge before going to the Iron Throne if you have not yet started Retrieve Omeluum. Speak with Blurg, then pursue the Iron Throne through the Gondian or Umberlee-related storyline. After the rescue, return to the Lodge immediately to collect Omeluum’s reward.

If you are carrying the githyanki egg, decide what to do with it before progressing too far through Act Three. Selling it to Havkelaag is a direct reward, while keeping it may preserve later epilogue outcomes.

Hazards and secrets

The Ptarian Code

The Ptarian Code is not simply background flavour. It explains why Ptaris believes that killing the Society members was an act of moral correction. Reading it alongside Havkelaag’s Journal clarifies that the Society’s experiment did not merely accelerate Ptaris physically. It imposed an artificial moral framework on him and then treated the result as evidence.

The basement route

The basement and docks are the most state-sensitive part of the Lodge. They are not just a secondary storage area. Their contents and occupants depend on the egg’s fate, and the Ptaris route uses the basement as the location where the experiment’s consequences become visible.

The Society vault

The vault contains two Gold Ingots and other valuable materials. The Lodge’s research rooms also contain alchemical ingredients, including rare varieties. These are useful for alchemy-focused parties, but the location is not a conventional shop or crafting station.

---

Lore and themes

The Lodge’s storyline examines whether behaviour is inherited, taught or manufactured. Havkelaag wants to test “genetic morality” by raising a githyanki in a controlled environment. The result is not a neutral experiment. Ptaris is accelerated, isolated from a normal childhood and taught a rigid code, then judged according to the code that was imposed upon him.

This connects the Lodge to several recurring themes in Baldur’s Gate 3:

Ptaris’s presence also gives the earlier githyanki egg quest a delayed consequence. The decision does not end when the party leaves Crèche Y’llek. It returns in Act Three as a location-wide state change.
