River Chionthar

The River Chionthar is one of the most important geographical features in Baldur’s Gate 3, although it is not a single conventional wilderness map with one entrance, one waypoint and one fixed encounter table.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The River Chionthar is not a conventional standalone playable region Its directly represented locations are distributed across Act One and Act Three.
  • The Ravaged Beach is the clearest Act One riverbank area It is where the player wakes after the Nautiloid crash and where several early companions can be recruited.
  • The Wilderness and Risen Road are neighbouring regions, not interchangeable names for the river. They contain stretches of riverbank and roads running alongside the Chionthar.
  • Rivington lies on the southern bank near Baldur’s Gate, while Wyrm’s Crossing provides the fortified route into the city.
  • Wyrm’s Crossing is both a transport bottleneck and a dense quest hub It contains checkpoints, businesses, faction activity and routes into Wyrm’s Rock Fortress.
  • Baldur’s Gate is broader than the river corridor Its Lower City, Upper City, sewers and Undercity should be treated as neighbouring urban regions rather than subareas of the River Chionthar itself.

About this guide

Base-game guide for Baldur’s Gate 3 Spoilers: This guide discusses the opening of Act One, major Act Three locations, companion recruitment, the approach to Baldur’s Gate and several quest-related areas.

Overview

The River Chionthar is one of the most important geographical features in Baldur’s Gate 3, although it is not a single conventional wilderness map with one entrance, one waypoint and one fixed encounter table. It is a major river corridor running through the game’s setting, linking the Wilderness, Rivington, Wyrm’s Crossing and the city of Baldur’s Gate.

The player’s journey follows the river westward in broad terms. The adventure begins on the Chionthar’s bank at the Ravaged Beach, continues through the roads and settlements of the Sword Coast, and eventually reaches the river-crossing fortifications outside Baldur’s Gate. Wyrm’s Crossing is the most literal in-game crossing point: a pair of bridges and associated buildings spanning the river between Rivington and Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. Baldur’s Gate itself occupies the river’s western end and has its harbour at the Chionthar’s estuary.

This guide therefore treats “River Chionthar” as a geographical and narrative corridor, not as a claim that every location near the river belongs to one game-region hierarchy.

Named areas directly associated with the river

Some of these are riverbank or crossing locations, while others are larger regions whose boundaries extend well beyond the water.

---

The Ravaged Beach is the most important directly playable Chionthar location in Act One. It is where the player character wakes after the Nautiloid crashes into Faerûn. The wreckage dominates the shore, while the surrounding beach contains early enemies, companion encounters, hidden caches and routes towards the Overgrown Ruins and Roadside Cliffs.

The beach is part of the Wilderness region, but it has its own distinct identity and is the best place to understand the Chionthar’s role in the opening sequence. The player can see the broad river beside the wreckage and explore ruined docks, rocky ledges and stretches of shoreline.

Named areas directly associated with the river

Main subareas

Southern and eastern beach

This is the area where the player wakes. If Shadowheart is rescued during the Prologue, she can be found unconscious on the beach with the Mysterious Artefact. She can normally be recruited here.

The beach also contains bodies that can be examined with Speak with Dead, including:

The ancient door near the Overgrown Ruins leads towards the Dank Crypt, although the area can also be entered through the Overgrown Ruins. The beach contains several buried chests, scattered containers and alchemical ingredients.

Nautiloid Wreck

The crashed Nautiloid is still occupied by hostile intellect devourers and contains the remains of abductees and mind flayers. A dying mind flayer can be found among the wreckage. Interacting with it is dangerous because the creature attempts to feed on a party member’s brain.

The wreck can be approached directly, but the opening encounter is easier if the party first recruits available companions and returns with a larger group.

Western Beach

The western side is rockier and leads towards Astarion’s recruitment encounter. It also contains a dock, a locked chest, a hidden Harper cache and a spider-filled crevice.

The hidden Harper cache is one of the most worthwhile early discoveries. A character can identify the moved rock near the cache and uncover:

The Harper’s Map points towards another stash at the Harper outpost. The outpost itself contains a Silver Pendant, potions, alchemical materials and a stash chest.

Harper outpost

The Harper outpost is on the western side of the Roadside Cliffs, above the river-facing part of the Wilderness. It is not a settlement or staffed base in the normal sense. It is a small abandoned or lightly maintained observation point containing a watchtower, campfire and supplies.

A spider-filled crevice nearby contains a Spider Egg Sac and gold. Taking the pouch can trigger a dangerous spider encounter, depending on how the interaction is handled.

Companions and named figures

Available companions

The exact recruitment order depends on the player’s actions during the Prologue and the route taken after the crash. Lae’zel’s body may also appear on the beach if she dies aboard the Nautiloid, allowing a later revival and recruitment.

Other named or identifiable figures

Raphael’s appearance is not restricted to one exact presentation of the beach route, so players should not assume that failing to meet him there removes him permanently from the game.

Available companions

Enemies and hazards

The Ravaged Beach is an early-game area, but it contains several hazards that can punish an unprepared party:

The mind flayer encounter is particularly risky. It can kill the interacting character immediately if the player submits to its control or fails the relevant interaction.

Fixed or semi-fixed discoveries

The page for Ravaged Beach identifies several of these items, routes and encounters, including the Harper material, the mind flayer, companion encounters and hidden chests.

The Risen Road

The Risen Road is the principal overland route accompanying the Chionthar. It connects Elturel and Baldur’s Gate and offers an alternative to river travel. It should be treated as a road region that runs beside the river, rather than as part of the River Chionthar itself.

The road connects or approaches several major Act One locations:

The player does not simply follow the river from Act One into Act Two. The story branches through the Mountain Pass or Underdark before eventually reaching the Shadow-Cursed Lands and, later, Act Three.

The Risen Road

Wilderness to Rivington

Act Three begins in the broader approach to Baldur’s Gate. The party reaches Rivington, a settlement on the southern bank of the Chionthar and on the eastern outskirts of the city. The route then continues north-west through Wyrm’s Crossing.

This is a major change in the river’s presentation:

Wyrm’s Crossing

Wyrm’s Crossing is a fortified bridge region between Rivington and Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. It must be crossed to reach the Lower City. The bridge is lined with establishments, wooden decks, scaffolding and back routes, making vertical exploration important.

The buildings often have open rear sections or river-facing platforms. These can provide alternate approaches, especially when the main road is blocked or heavily guarded.

South Span Checkpoint

The South Span Checkpoint controls the approach from Rivington. It contains Flaming Fist guards, storage areas and lootable containers. The party may also encounter Manip Falcäo and receive a pest-related request after gaining access with the help of the deep gnomes.

The checkpoint can be bypassed with movement abilities, jumps or teleportation-style effects from the nearby cliffs. This is not a requirement for ordinary progression, but it demonstrates that the crossing is designed to support more than one route.

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress is an island fortress and a Flaming Fist headquarters. It stands between the bridge and the city, making it the final major security barrier before the Lower City.

The fortress is not simply a decorative river landmark. It is a major progression location involving:

The party’s relationship with Gortash, the Steel Watch and the city’s authorities can change how freely the fortress and its guards treat the group.

The area contains two broad layers

  1. 01
    The bridge and its businesses.
  2. 02
The fortified approach to Wyrm’s Rock and the South Span Checkpoint.

Wyrm’s Crossing directory

Traders and vendors

The trader directory identifies Carmen Pennygood as selling camp clothing and dyes, Entharl Danthelon as a weapons and armour trader, Stylin’ Horst as a potions and alchemy trader, and several bridge-side vendors with fish, camp supplies, paintings, grenades or tools.

Factions represented

The Harpers are most visibly associated with Danthelon’s Dancing Axe, which functions as both a weapons and armour shop and a Harper safehouse.

---

Rivington is a separate Act Three region on the southern bank of the Chionthar. It is not merely the eastern half of Wyrm’s Crossing. The settlement contains refugee activity, religious locations, commercial facilities, the Circus of the Last Days and several routes down to the river.

The river-facing Western Beach is particularly important. It can be reached by descending from paths near the South Span Checkpoint, the Gur Camp, Sword Coast Couriers and the Open Hand Temple. Its terrain consists of rocky ledges, roots, caves and shore paths.

Buildings and businesses

Rivington directory

Businesses and services

Rivington General is a weapons and armour store run by Gyldro Angleiron and Exxvikyap. Sword Coast Couriers is the local post office, while the Requisitioned Barn is being used for refugee-related storage. These are functional locations rather than scenery-only buildings.

Notable residents and visitors

Rivington’s population changes according to the party’s progress through Act Three quests. Some characters are residents, while others are refugees, guards, travellers or performers temporarily present in the area.

---

Baldur’s Gate is a large city on the banks of the Chionthar and beside one of its natural bays. It is too large to classify as a subarea of the River Chionthar. Instead, it is the major urban destination at the western end of the river corridor.

The Lower City is the main playable urban district and contains many businesses, homes, temples, workshops and faction bases. The river is most relevant here as a harbour, waterfront boundary and source of maritime traffic rather than as a wilderness exploration zone.

Businesses and services

Notable residents and visitors: The city contains multiple major regions

River-associated Baldur’s Gate locations

The city’s major quests are not all river quests. The waterfront context connects to the city’s religious, mercantile and political life, but the Lower City should be explored as its own substantial Act Three region.

---

The Chionthar is represented not only through scenery but also through environmental storytelling. Books and mundane objects reinforce the idea that the river supports trade, settlement and travel.

River-associated Baldur’s Gate locations

River-associated items

The book Flow of the Chionthar describes the river’s history, settlements, barges, cargo and riverside life. It can be found on a bookshelf in the Last Light Inn and in Elerrathin’s Home. These placements are in Act Two and Act Three locations, not on the riverbank itself, so they should be treated as evidence of the river’s wider setting lore rather than as Ravaged Beach collectibles.

Real-world and series inspirations

The Chionthar belongs to the Forgotten Realms setting and is part of the wider Sword Coast geography. The Sword Coast in Baldur’s Gate 3 is represented particularly through the corridor between Elturel and Baldur’s Gate, with the Chionthar and the Risen Road serving as major geographical anchors.

The river also connects Baldur’s Gate 3 to the wider Baldur’s Gate setting. Baldur’s Gate’s identity as a major port city, its harbour and its position on the Chionthar predate this game, although the exact playable areas and their layouts are specific to the game’s interpretation.

Route C: thorough checklist

---

The River Chionthar corridor contains both fixed content and progression-sensitive content.

Fixed content

These generally remain available when the area is first explored:

Progression-sensitive content

The following can change based on player choices, quest order or major Act Three developments:

The game does not use one universal “River Chionthar completion” state. Each associated map has its own quest flags and progression conditions.

---

“The Wilderness is the River Chionthar”

Not exactly. The Wilderness is a larger Act One region that includes part of the river and part of the Risen Road. The Ravaged Beach is the clearest riverbank subarea within it.

“Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing are the same place”

They are connected but distinct. Rivington is the southern-bank settlement. Wyrm’s Crossing is the bridge region beyond it, leading towards Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and Baldur’s Gate.

“Wyrm’s Crossing is just a bridge”

It is a region built around the bridge. It includes businesses, guard towers, rear scaffolds, residences, quest areas and access to the fortress. Treating it as a simple transit map causes players to miss a substantial amount of content.

“Baldur’s Gate is part of the River Chionthar location”

Baldur’s Gate is situated on the river, but it is a much larger city region. Its Lower City, sewers, Undercity and Upper City should be researched and navigated independently.

Is the River Chionthar an explorable map?

No single continuous River Chionthar map has been identified in the base game. It is represented across several maps and regions, particularly the Ravaged Beach, Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing.

Where does the player first reach the river?

The player wakes on the Ravaged Beach after the Nautiloid crash. The beach is explicitly on the bank of the River Chionthar.

Can the river be sailed?

The base game does not provide a general-purpose sailing system for travelling along the Chionthar. River travel is part of the setting and lore, but the player’s actual movement follows connected map areas, roads, bridges and fast-travel waypoints.

What is the most important river location?

For Act One, it is the Ravaged Beach. For Act Three, it is Wyrm’s Crossing, because the crossing controls access from Rivington to the city.

Is the Risen Road part of the river?

No. It is a separate road that runs parallel to the Chionthar and connects Elturel with Baldur’s Gate.

What should I loot before leaving the Ravaged Beach?

Prioritise the Harper cache, Harper’s Map, Harper’s Notebook, the Silver Pendant, buried chests, the beach corpses, the western dock and containers near the Nautiloid Wreck.
