Key takeaways
- The region has two main entrances the elevator from Grymforge and the route from Rosymorn Monastery Trail.
- The eastern half is dominated by the Ruined Battlefield and Last Light Inn The western half contains Reithwin Town, Moonrise Towers and the Grand Mausoleum.
- The Shadow Curse is weaker in the eastern approaches and stronger near Moonrise Towers. Torches, the Light spell and similar light sources help in weaker areas, but the denser curse requires a Moonlantern or Pixie Blessing.
- Last Light Inn is the safest first destination for most characters Its residents provide protection, companion developments, rescue missions and the route to a Moonlantern.
- Moonrise Towers should be infiltrated before completing the Gauntlet of Shar Entering the Shadowfell at the end of the Gauntlet is a major progression point that can resolve or fail several quests.
- Lifting the curse requires both the Art Cullagh and Halsin storyline and the later confrontation with Ketheric Thorm. The two halves of the land spirit are Thaniel and Oliver.
About this guide
Scope: Baldur’s Gate 3, base game, Act Two. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses major Act Two revelations, the Nightsong, Ketheric Thorm, the Shadow Curse, Moonrise Towers, companion quests and several irreversible progression points.
Overview
The Shadow-Cursed Lands are the principal open region of Act Two in Baldur’s Gate 3. They are not just the area around Reithwin Town. The region includes the eastern Ruined Battlefield, Last Light Inn, the western Reithwin Town district and its buildings, Moonrise Towers, the Grand Mausoleum, the Gauntlet of Shar, and several interior or mission-only areas connected to those locations. The region is bordered by the Underdark and Rosymorn Monastery Trail, while the Road to Baldur’s Gate becomes usable only after the Act Two finale.

Regional boundaries and hierarchy
The Shadow-Cursed Lands are a region, not a single settlement. The game’s regional map contains several connected locations and interiors, some of which have their own loading screens or minimap labels. The principal hierarchy is:
Western section
The region also contains nameless paths, camps, ruined structures, ambush sites and small map landmarks that are not always displayed as separate locations. The principal waypoint network is Shadowed Battlefield, Last Light Inn, Reithwin Town, Grand Mausoleum, Moonrise Towers and Road to Baldur’s Gate.

Geography and atmosphere
Before the curse, this land was associated with Selûne and the Thorm family. Moonrise Towers was originally a Selûnite structure, and Reithwin was home to Selûnite worshippers. Ketheric Thorm’s grief after the death of his daughter led him towards Shar, the Dark Justiciars and eventually the creation of the Shadow Curse.
The curse is not uniform. The eastern approaches are comparatively survivable, while the land around Moonrise Towers is more deeply corrupted. Unprotected characters entering the curse can be forced into turn-based mode and suffer escalating necrotic damage. If a character dies while affected, they can gain Umbral Influx and return as hostile undead unless dealt with and resurrected appropriately.
Practical protection
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Torches | Useful in the weaker eastern areas. |
| Light-producing spells | Light and similar effects can help in less dense sections. |
| Blessing of Selûne | Granted by Isobel at Last Light Inn. It offers basic protection but does not replace a Moonlantern in the deepest areas. |
| Moonlantern | Required for reliable travel near Moonrise Towers unless another special protection is active. |
| Pixie Blessing | The most convenient long-term protection once obtained from the appropriate Moonlantern encounter. |
| Shadowheart | Has special resistance to the weaker curse in some circumstances, but this is not sufficient for the densest regions and should not be treated as a general solution. |
Access and routes
From Grymforge
The Grymforge elevator opens near the northern part of the Ruined Battlefield. This route brings the party relatively close to Last Light Inn. The elevator itself is reached through the area behind the wrought-iron gate in Grymforge.
This is usually the most convenient entry if the party has explored the Underdark extensively. It places the group near Harper activity and allows a comparatively direct route to Last Light Inn.
From Rosymorn Monastery Trail
The route from the Mountain Pass enters the southern or south-eastern side of the Ruined Battlefield. The party encounters an Absolutist staging area and may become involved with the convoy travelling towards Moonrise Towers.
This route is useful for characters who want to follow the cult’s convoy, meet Kar’niss and obtain a Moonlantern through the convoy sequence. It is also the natural continuation of the Mountain Pass and Rosymorn Monastery Trail.
Suggested first route: For a thorough playthrough
- 01Enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
- 02Secure a light source before crossing the first curse boundary.
- 03Explore the nearby Ruined Battlefield without rushing west.
- 04Reach Last Light Inn.
- 05Speak to Isobel, Jaheira, the Harpers, the Flaming Fists and the refugees.
- 06Start the Art Cullagh and Halsin storyline.
- 07Explore Moonrise Towers before completing the Gauntlet of Shar.
- 08Return to Reithwin Town and investigate its buildings.
- 09Complete the Grand Mausoleum and Gauntlet of Shar only after resolving Moonrise rescue opportunities.
- 10Enter the Shadowfell, then return to Moonrise Towers for the end of Act Two.
Ruined Battlefield
The Ruined Battlefield spans much of the eastern Shadow-Cursed Lands. It is the first large outdoor area regardless of which entrance is used, although the exact approach differs. The battlefield contains the first curse hazards, shadow-creature ambushes, ruined camps, dead Harpers, remains of earlier expeditions and the route towards Last Light Inn.
A number of minor discoveries are easy to miss because they are not large buildings. For example, the area includes the remains of a druid carrying the Dead Druid’s Journal, the grave of Ellie May, a hidden Family Ring, Dal Lightspark and his Harper Journal, Bagida’s remains and key, and a dead Duergar known as the Grey Scout. These discoveries provide lore, map markers or small rewards rather than opening a major dungeon.

Last Light Inn
Last Light Inn is the principal safe settlement in the region. It stands across a bridge north-west of the Ruined Battlefield and is protected from the Shadow Curse. The inn is occupied by Harpers, Flaming Fists, refugees and other survivors. Jaheira leads the defence, while Isobel maintains the magical protection that keeps the curse away.
The inn is the centre of several mutually dependent quests. Speak to the residents before leaving, particularly if you want to preserve as many quest outcomes as possible.
The Last Light disaster
The encounter involving Isobel and Marcus is one of the region’s most important failure points. If Isobel is abducted, killed or otherwise lost, the inn’s protection can fail. Many inhabitants may become shadow-cursed, and several quests can end immediately or become impossible.
Because of this, make a manual save before speaking to Isobel if you want to explore alternative outcomes. The consequences affect Jaheira, the tiefling refugees, Dammon, Alfira’s quest line and other residents.

Reithwin Town
Reithwin Town occupies the western part of the region. It is not a living settlement in the ordinary sense. The town is largely abandoned, with its former Selûnite identity replaced by the necrotic legacy of the Thorm family and the influence of Shar.
The town is a cluster of buildings and subareas rather than one enclosed map segment. Its principal sites are the House of Healing, Mason’s Guild, Reithwin Tollhouse, graveyard, Sharran Sanctuary and The Waning Moon.
Reithwin Town directory
House of Healing
The House of Healing is a former medical and religious building now controlled by Shar-aligned figures. It is central to the quest involving Malus Thorm, and it contains the Surgical Ward and a morgue area.
The location can be approached through conversation, stealth or combat. Certain dialogue options can substantially change the encounter with Malus and the nurses. Characters with suitable religious, medical or performance knowledge may gain alternative solutions, but the area can always become a combat encounter.
House of Healing directory
The morgue is also associated with Arabella’s quest to find her parents. Search carefully and use dialogue or examination abilities where available, since the quest’s emotional and mechanical resolution depends on what is discovered there.

Mason’s Guild and Selûnite resistance
The Mason’s Guild is one of the clearest places to investigate Reithwin’s earlier resistance to Shar. The building contains records, notes and evidence concerning the old conflict. It also connects to the Investigate the Selûnite Resistance quest.
The guild is associated with the Infernal Mason, an important figure in the region’s history. His work, the Thorm family and the campaign against the Dark Justiciars help explain why the land was vulnerable to the Shadow Curse.
Directory
The guild is worth visiting even if the party is not following the quest directly. It gives context for the town’s destruction and provides practical evidence about the factions that fought here.
Directory
Reithwin Tollhouse
The Reithwin Tollhouse is guarded by Gerringothe Thorm, one of the undead Thorm family members. The encounter can be resolved through dialogue, deception, payment or combat, depending on the party’s choices and checks.
The tollhouse is a useful example of the region’s recurring design: the Thorm family’s institutions remain in place, but their social functions have become grotesque echoes of what they once were.
Directory
The Waning Moon
The Waning Moon is a brewery and tavern in Reithwin Town. It is controlled by Thisobald Thorm and contains the ledger needed for Punish the Wicked, the quest connected to He Who Was.
The main encounter can be approached through conversation, drinking challenges, performance, saving throws or combat. Characters with high Constitution, suitable class options or the ability to avoid drinking can make the sequence considerably easier.
Directory
Grand Mausoleum and Gauntlet of Shar
The Grand Mausoleum lies north of Reithwin Town, beyond the graveyard and House of Healing. It is the Thorm family mausoleum and the entrance to the Gauntlet of Shar. The mausoleum contains the mural and button puzzle required to enter the lower complex.
The Gauntlet of Shar is a large underground dungeon devoted to Shar and the training of Dark Justiciars. It is central to Shadowheart’s personal quest and to the main Act Two plot concerning the Nightsong.
Critical progression warning
Do not enter the Shadowfell casually. Entering the final section of the Gauntlet can progress or resolve several time-sensitive quests. Before committing, complete as many of the following as possible:
Gauntlet directory
Moonrise Towers
Moonrise Towers is the seat of the Absolute and the main enemy stronghold in Act Two. Despite being surrounded by the strongest part of the curse, the towers themselves are protected by Moonlanterns and function as a comparatively stable area.
Moonrise is not simply a dungeon to storm. It is designed to be infiltrated. The party can walk through much of the main floor under false pretences, speak to cultists, trade with merchants, rescue prisoners and investigate the tower before the final assault.
Moonrise prisoners
The prison is linked to the quests Rescue the Tieflings, Rescue Wulbren and Find Mol, although the exact outcomes depend on earlier events. Breaking prisoners out before the assault is strongly recommended. Waiting until after the tower becomes hostile can remove opportunities, change the prison layout or make rescue impossible.
A common rescue approach is to work with the prisoners, obtain or create a route through the rear wall, disable guards and escape by boat. Alternative methods involving force, stealth or manipulation are possible.

Important characters and factions
Harpers and Flaming Fists
The Harpers and Flaming Fists operate from Last Light Inn. Their immediate priorities are protecting Isobel, surviving the curse and stopping the Absolute’s convoy. Jaheira is the most important named Harper in the region and may later become a recruitable companion if the relevant events are handled successfully.
Cult of the Absolute
The cult controls Moonrise Towers and uses the region as a route towards Baldur’s Gate. Its forces include Absolutist soldiers, True Souls, guards, scrying eyes, undead and creatures protected from the curse by Moonlanterns.
Sharrans and Dark Justiciars
Shar’s influence is visible throughout Reithwin Town, the Gauntlet of Shar and the Thorm family’s history. The Dark Justiciars were central to Ketheric’s original campaign, and their legacy remains in the Gauntlet and its trials.
Thorm family
The named Thorm figures encountered across the region include:
Main quests and activities
These quests overlap heavily. For example, Wake Art Cullagh leads to Halsin’s investigation of Thaniel, while Lift the Shadow Curse eventually requires the encounter with Oliver at the House in Deep Shadows. The quest list and regional flow are documented separately in the Act Two quest directory.
The principal regional quest directory is
Lifting the Shadow Curse
The curse is tied to the land’s divided spirit. Thaniel is trapped in the Shadowfell, while Oliver remains in the cursed land at the House in Deep Shadows. Their separation is connected to Ketheric’s original release of Shar’s power over the region.
The order matters. If major Act Two progression is completed without addressing Art, Halsin and Thaniel, the curse-lifting opportunity can be lost.
A practical route is
- 01Find Art Cullagh at Last Light Inn.
- 02Obtain the information or item needed to wake him.
- 03Speak to Halsin.
- 04Defend Halsin while he retrieves Thaniel.
- 05Visit the House in Deep Shadows.
- 06Meet Oliver.
- 07Resolve Oliver’s shadow-child encounter.
- 08Reunite Oliver and Thaniel.
- 09Defeat Ketheric and remove his hold over the land.
- 10Leave the region only after confirming the curse has been lifted.
Items and collectibles
The region contains a mixture of fixed quest rewards, merchant stock, unique equipment, story objects and randomised containers. Important fixed or strongly associated items include:
Not every chest or container has a fixed named reward. Some battlefield treasure is generated from general loot tables, and some enemy equipment depends on the encounter or the party’s choices. This is particularly relevant when comparing different playthroughs.

Lore and trivia
The region’s history is deliberately presented through contrasting religious imagery. Selûne’s light, Shar’s darkness and the artificial protection of Moonlanterns all compete for control of the same landscape. Moonrise Towers, once associated with Selûne, becomes the operational centre of the Absolute, while Last Light Inn survives as a smaller and more vulnerable refuge.
The curse is also unusual because it is not merely an environmental hazard. It is the physical expression of a broken land spirit, and its cure requires political, personal and supernatural resolutions at the same time. The player must deal with Ketheric’s immortality, the fate of the Nightsong, the divided spirit of Thaniel and Oliver, and the survival of the region’s remaining inhabitants.
