Key takeaways

  • “Wilderness” is a region, not just the Forest The Forest, Emerald Grove, Goblin Camp, Blighted Village, Risen Road, Sunlit Wetlands, Waukeen’s Rest, Overgrown Ruins, Ravaged Beach and Mountain Pass all belong to the broad region.

Note

Base game guide. Covers the Act One overworld region called the Wilderness, including its named child locations and the principal interiors that belong to them. It does not treat the Underdark, Grymforge, Rosymorn Monastery Trail beyond the Mountain Pass transition, or the Nautiloid as part of the Wilderness proper.

Overview

The Wilderness is Baldur’s Gate 3’s principal Act One overworld region. It is a broad, connected stretch of forest, riverbank, road, marsh and ruined settlement in Elturgard, positioned along the River Chionthar between Elturel and Baldur’s Gate. The region is much larger than the starting beach or the central Forest map. It includes the Emerald Grove, Blighted Village, Goblin Camp, Sunlit Wetlands, The Risen Road, Waukeen’s Rest, the Overgrown Ruins and the Mountain Pass, as well as several smaller named areas and dungeon entrances.

The Wilderness is where most early-game conflicts converge:

Many of these stories can be approached in different orders. However, several apparently harmless progression steps, especially travelling to the Mountain Pass or resting after approaching Waukeen’s Rest, can advance or close off events.

Ravaged Beach and the Nautiloid Wreck

The Ravaged Beach is the post-prologue starting area. It lies beside the River Chionthar and is dominated by the crashed Nautiloid. The beach contains intellect devourers, dead fishermen, wreckage and the route towards the Overgrown Ruins and Roadside Cliffs.

Shadowheart can be found unconscious on the beach if she was not already recruited during the prologue. Astarion is nearby, west of the wreck, and can be encountered while he is dealing with an intellect devourer. The area also establishes the Wilderness’s vertical design, with cliffs, ledges, jump routes and entrances that are not always reached by following the obvious path.

Named entries

Overgrown Ruins and the Dank Crypt

The Overgrown Ruins are the eastern starting-side ruins above the beach. The visible ruins are associated with the Chapel Ruins, while the Dank Crypt lies below them. The crypt contains traps, undead guardians, sarcophagi and a major early-game discovery involving Withers.

There are several ways to reach the crypt, including the main chapel entrance and alternative routes through the ruins. Characters with strong Perception, trap-disarming ability or reliable ranged attacks are useful here. The area rewards deliberate exploration rather than simply moving from room to room.

Named entries

Roadside Cliffs and Emerald Grove Environs

The Roadside Cliffs occupy the area between the crashed Nautiloid, the Forest and the Emerald Grove. Gale appears at the Roadside Cliffs waypoint, while Lae’zel can be found trapped by the tieflings Damays and Nymessa. The route also contains early goblin encounters and several ledges that reward jumping or enhanced mobility.

The Emerald Grove Environs form the approach to the grove itself. The grove is not merely a single building: it includes the outer approach, the Hollow, Sacred Pool, Inner Sanctum, Underground Passage, Secluded Chamber, Tiefling Hideout and the Secluded Cove.

Named entries

Emerald Grove

The Emerald Grove, also known as the Druid’s Grove or Silvanus’ Grove, is the principal settlement in the north-eastern Wilderness. It houses the druids and most of the tiefling refugees from Elturel. The settlement is under pressure from nearby goblins and from the druids’ plan to complete the Rite of Thorns, which would close the grove and force the refugees out.

The Hollow

The Hollow is the main cavernous settlement area. It contains tiefling refugees, traders, children, workers and several quest-givers. Wyll can be recruited here. The area also contains entrances to the Secluded Chamber and Tiefling Hideout, as well as routes towards the Sacred Pool and Underground Passage.

Sacred Pool

The Sacred Pool is the grove’s ritual centre. Druids perform the Rite of Thorns around the Idol of Silvanus. The area contains Volo and Alfira and is linked to the Inner Sanctum, ramparts and Secluded Cove. The Idol is also central to the quest involving stealing or protecting the sacred relic.

Inner Sanctum

The Inner Sanctum contains the Druids’ Chambers, Servants’ Quarters, Enclave Library and access to the Underground Passage. Kagha and Rath are found here, while Nettie can be encountered in the Druids’ Chambers.

The Inner Sanctum is the main location for:

Residents and visitors

The grove’s character roster is extensive. The dedicated Emerald Grove character category lists more than one hundred pages, including minor refugees, druids, children, traders, guards and quest-related figures.

Forest and Blighted Village

The Forest is the central Wilderness area. It lies between the Emerald Grove, Goblin Camp, Risen Road and Sunlit Wetlands. The Blighted Village is situated within it but is treated as a separate location. The Forest also contains the Owlbear Nest and the entrance to the Whispering Depths.

The Blighted Village is recognisable by its windmill and abandoned buildings. It has been occupied by goblins and contains several early quests, hidden basements and routes below ground. The village is one of the best places in the Wilderness to practise checking bookshelves, locked doors, breakable floors and suspicious wells.

Goblin Camp and Shattered Sanctum

The Goblin Camp occupies the grounds of a former Selûnite temple. The outer camp is distinct from the interior Shattered Sanctum, although they are closely connected. The camp is divided into a forest checkpoint, a central square, smaller side areas, ruined temple structures and access points above and around the Sanctum.

The camp can be approached openly or covertly. The main entrance is guarded by goblins and worgs under Sentinel Olak. Other routes include jumping or descending from the Blighted Village area and using Feather Fall, Misty Step, enhanced jumping or flight to reach elevated sections.

Goblin Camp directory

The first entry into the main camp can trigger a cutscene involving the Absolute, the party’s tadpoles and the mysterious artefact. The exact presentation varies depending on whether Shadowheart is present and how the player has used illithid powers.

Sunlit Wetlands and Putrid Bog

The Sunlit Wetlands are the south-western part of the Wilderness. The area first presents itself as a pleasant wetland, but its appearance changes after the player sees through the illusion concealing the Putrid Bog.

The area is associated with Auntie Ethel, Mayrina, the redcaps and the Overgrown Tunnel. It is one of the Wilderness’s most deceptive locations: the safest-looking paths are not always the safest routes, and several environmental details only become meaningful after the illusion is removed.

Named entries

The Risen Road

The Risen Road runs parallel to the River Chionthar and acts as an overland trade route between Elturel and Baldur’s Gate. Within the Wilderness it links the Blighted Village, Emerald Grove, Waukeen’s Rest and the Mountain Pass.

This is one of the region’s most dangerous open areas. Hyenas and gnolls patrol the road, and the player can become involved in the attack on the Zhentarim agents Rugan and Olly. The road also introduces Karlach, Anders and the conflict surrounding the so-called “devil” being hunted by the paladins of Tyr.

Notable characters

The Risen Road contains several fixed items connected to its encounters, including Reason’s Grasp, Speedy Reply and the Zhentarim shipment. The trader Brem is associated with the Zhentarim hideout and sells grenades, weapons and armour when the relevant conditions are met.

Important locations

Notable characters

Waukeen’s Rest

Waukeen’s Rest is a burning inn in the north-west Wilderness. It has recently been attacked by goblins and drow, and Flaming Fist soldiers are attempting to rescue people trapped inside. The location contains the quests Rescue the Grand Duke, Rescue the Trapped Man, Find the Missing Shipment and related Wyll content.

Time-sensitive warning

Approach Waukeen’s Rest only when ready to begin the rescue. Once the party has triggered the relevant scene, leaving, fast travelling, entering the camp or long resting can cause the trapped survivors, including Counselor Florrick, to die. The quest may still be obtainable later in Act Three, but the immediate rescue opportunity is lost.

Named entries

Mountain Pass

The Mountain Pass is a small Wilderness location connected to the Risen Road and Waukeen’s Rest. It is not the same as the later Rosymorn Monastery Trail, although it provides access towards that separate region. The area contains the githyanki patrol and a major progression route out of the Wilderness.

From the Risen Road, the party can reach the Mountain Pass through the crossroads near Waukeen’s Rest. The Goblin Camp also has a difficult upper route towards it that requires abilities such as Misty Step, Enhance Leap or Grant Flight, or sufficiently high Strength for the necessary jumps.

Recommended first route

This is not a mandatory order. The game permits substantial variation, including reaching the Goblin Camp before entering the grove, entering the Underdark early or visiting Waukeen’s Rest before the Blighted Village.

A practical first-playthrough route is

  1. 01
    Explore the Ravaged Beach.
  2. 02
Complete or partially explore the Overgrown Ruins and Dank Crypt.
  3. 03
Recruit nearby companions around the Roadside Cliffs.
  4. 04
Visit the Emerald Grove before committing to the goblin conflict.
  5. 05
Explore the Forest and Blighted Village.
  6. 06
    Investigate the Sunlit Wetlands.
  7. 07
Travel along the Risen Road and deal with the gnolls.
  8. 08
Resolve Waukeen’s Rest immediately after approaching it.
  9. 09
Explore the Goblin Camp and Shattered Sanctum.
  10. 10
Finish remaining Wilderness quests before choosing the Mountain Pass or Underdark route.

Emerald Grove druids

The druids, led temporarily by Kagha while Halsin is absent, are attempting to complete the Rite of Thorns. Their position is driven by fear of the goblins and concern for the grove’s survival, but the policy threatens the tiefling refugees. The player can support, oppose or expose Kagha depending on investigative choices.

Tiefling refugees

The refugees are concentrated in the Hollow. Their survival depends on the grove’s political outcome and the player’s handling of the goblin threat. Several refugee stories involve children, missing belongings, personal debts, Karlach’s infernal engine and the eventual fate of the settlement.

Goblin forces

The Goblin Camp is an organised military and religious centre rather than a random bandit camp. The goblins are aligned with the Absolute and are led locally by Priestess Gut, Minthara and Dror Ragzlin. The camp includes prisoners, traders, performers, torturers and patrols.

Flaming Fist

The Flaming Fist presence is most visible at Waukeen’s Rest, where soldiers attempt to rescue the Grand Duke and other survivors. Their authority is practical rather than fully effective because the inn is already collapsing and burning.

Zhentarim

The Zhentarim are involved in the missing shipment on the Risen Road. Depending on the party’s decisions, the player can gain access to the Zhentarim Basement and trade with Brem. The shipment, the agents Rugan and Olly, and the strongbox create several mutually exclusive outcomes.

---

The trader list identifies Arron, Auntie Ethel, Volo, Brem and Cyrel as Act One Wilderness traders, while also warning that some traders can become unavailable through story choices.

Do not assume that a named building is a functioning shop. Several Wilderness structures are scenery, quest locations or containers rather than purchasable businesses.

Emerald Grove storyline

The Emerald Grove page lists these quests and identifies the Hollow, Sacred Pool and Inner Sanctum as the key spaces where they progress.

The grove’s central quest cluster includes

Goblin conflict

The Goblin Camp provides the main offensive route for resolving the grove crisis. The player can:

These decisions can radically alter the grove, its residents, available traders and future companion outcomes.

The missing shipment

On the Risen Road, the party can rescue Rugan and Olly from gnolls, take or return the shipment, open the strongbox, cooperate with the Zhentarim or kill the agents. The outcome affects access to the Zhentarim Basement and trader Brem.

Karlach and the paladins

Karlach can be recruited on the Risen Road. Her storyline intersects with Anders and the paladins of Tyr at the Toll House. The player should be cautious about accepting Anders’ account without investigating, particularly if Karlach is intended as a permanent companion.

Auntie Ethel

The Sunlit Wetlands storyline begins in the grove and continues through the Riverside Teahouse and Overgrown Tunnel. It combines illusion, dialogue checks, environmental hazards and a boss encounter. Characters with high Perception, fire resistance, ranged attacks and reliable crowd control are useful.

Waukeen’s Rest rescue

The Waukeen’s Rest sequence is best treated as a contained emergency:

The survivors’ deaths are progression-sensitive once the event begins.

---

The Wilderness contains a very large number of containers, fixed quest rewards, enemy drops and merchant inventories. The following are notable verified examples rather than an exhaustive item catalogue.

Waukeen’s Rest rescue: steps

  1. 01
Approach the inn and trigger the rescue.
  2. 02
Speak to the Flaming Fist outside.
  3. 03
Enter through the front or another available route.
  4. 04
    Free the trapped survivors.
  5. 05
    Rescue Benryn.
  6. 06
Search the building only after the urgent rescues are complete.
  7. 07
Resolve the Grand Duke and Zhentarim consequences.
  8. 08
    Only then leave or rest.

Emerald Grove

The Emerald Grove page separately identifies loot, quest items and quest rewards, including the Idol, Rune of the Wolf, Pale Oak and Ring of Protection.

Emerald Grove

The Risen Road and Waukeen’s Rest

Reason’s Grasp is found in a trapped chest near the gnoll area, while Speedy Reply is carried by a dead caravan agent. The shipment creates different rewards depending on whether it is delivered, stolen or opened.

Other locations

Some equipment comes from fixed containers or named enemies; other rewards depend on trader inventories, level, long rests or quest outcomes. Treat random container contents and merchant stock separately from fixed quest rewards.

Exploration advice

---

Before leaving the Wilderness for the Mountain Pass or another Act One region, consider checking the following:

---

Is the Blighted Village part of the Forest or a separate area?

Both descriptions are useful. Geographically, the village lies inside the Forest, but the game treats the Blighted Village as a separate named location with its own waypoint and subareas.

Is the Mountain Pass part of the Wilderness?

The Mountain Pass is listed as a location within the Wilderness in Act One, but it is also the route towards the separate Rosymorn Monastery Trail region. It should therefore be treated as both a Wilderness child location and a major regional transition.

Is the Goblin Camp the same as the Shattered Sanctum?

No. The Goblin Camp is the exterior settlement and temple grounds. The Shattered Sanctum is the inner temple area reached from the camp. They are closely linked but distinct spaces.

Does entering the Goblin Camp force a fight?

No. The camp has several entry routes and can be approached through dialogue, stealth, deception or combat. The main road checkpoint is guarded by Olak and two worgs, but alternative routes can avoid the checkpoint.

Should Waukeen’s Rest be visited early?

Visit it when ready to complete the immediate rescue. Do not simply trigger the scene and then leave for a long rest. The game can resolve the trapped survivors’ fate while the party is away.

Is the Wilderness the whole of Act One?

No. The Wilderness is the main surface region, but Act One also includes the Underdark, Grymforge, Mountain Pass and other connected areas. The Wilderness page lists the Underdark and Rosymorn Monastery Trail as adjacent regions rather than part of the same region.

Research and scope notes

This guide follows the game’s regional hierarchy rather than treating “Wilderness” as only the central Forest map. The principal boundary evidence comes from the Wilderness regional page, the location list and child-area pages for the Forest, Emerald Grove, Goblin Camp, The Risen Road, Waukeen’s Rest and Mountain Pass.

The broad directories above include verified named areas and major named residents, but they should not be read as a claim that every unnamed refugee, goblin, corpse, container or random drop has been catalogued. Merchant stock, random loot and level-dependent inventories can also change during a playthrough.
